The Federation of Ogoni Women's Associations (FOWA) is one of the most effective women's movements in Africa. “The purpose of the Federation of Ogoni Women Association in St. Louis shall be to bring together Ogoni women in a manner that promotes social-cultural interactions and exchange of knowledge and information about Africa/other parts of the word, including the USA”.
FOWA was established in 1993 as an affiliate of MOSOP to empower, mobilize, and champion the affairs of Ogoni women in the struggle against injustice in Nigeria. Following the mass killing of Ogoni people and subsequent execution of Ogoni leaders, including Mr. Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ogoni women leaders like the men who faced persecution by the Nigeria’s government were made refugees in neighboring African countries and later resettled to the United States. Some of the women found their new home in St. Louis, MO and have since continued to play key roles in Ogoni affairs. Few years after their arrival in St. Louis in 1996, they formed a chapter of FOWA in St. Louis.
